NORTHWEST COLORADO RANGERS

NORTHWEST COLORADO RANGERS

NEWSLETTER     SEPTEMBER 2007

Our August monthly match was honchoed by The Powder Wash Kid with a big assist from Snowy Creek Angel who wrote a stage and presented two of the stages.  Snowy Creek is 12 years old now, has been shooting matches for about a year, and developing her self confidence to the point where she wants to take the RO-I course and be prepared to RO a stage.  Another Buckaroo shooter, Snowy Owl, shot his first match this month and did an excellent job.  Gotta love it when the kids take an active part in our game.  We’re looking forward to having a lot of fun with the next generation of cowboy action shooters.

There has been a lot of discussion here and there about power factors and knock-down targets lately, so the Rangers tried an experiment with an all knock-down stage.  We made a number of interesting discoveries:  targets should not be at too much of an angle – the difficulty factor is multiplied considerably when they are;  even with heavy “wart hog” loads, targets must be hit to fall; knock-downs are big fun, but quite time consuming (average time for a total of 23 targets was around three minutes).  Every one had the opportunity to reload and pick up any targets still standing or use the shotgun at the end for final clean-up.  We will likely try this again next year with a few less targets and apply the lessons we learned.

After the main match, Colorado Hank ran some long range side matches.  The Some Dense Kid won the Single Shot match, followed by Colorado Hank and the Yampa River Kid.  Colorado Hank and The Some Dense Kid finished 1 and 2 in Big Bore Lever.

As usual we had a good set-up crew on Friday evening.  Thank you Snowy Creek Angel, Desperado James, Snowy Owl, Rusty S. Pots, Black Mountain Cat, Colorado Hank, Sagebrush Burns and Powder Wash Kid.  Marilyn Henderson acted as score-keeper, Jeff Knoche helped with brassing and clean-up (we’re hoping he will join us in the shooting next month), The Some Dense Kid and Black Mountain Cat handled match results and printing and everyone helped with clean-up.  It was another gorgeous day in northwest Colorado.  Sunshine and cool in the early morning and up to the mid 80s in the afternoon.

Our final match of the 2007 season will be our annual pot luck on Saturday, September 22nd.  The Rangers will supply fried chicken and everyone should bring something to share (chips, dessert, potato salad, baked beans…) Don’t forget your drinks, plates, napkins and utensils.  We look forward to finishing the 2007 season in the same spirit of fun and friendship we have shared since April.

As always, we’d like to hear from you if you have thoughts or ideas to help us do a better job.  Keep up with the Rangers on the Bears Ears Sportsman Club (BESC) web site at:  www.bearsears.org.

Thanks,

Sagebrush Burns
